About Black Immigrant Literacies: The Framework

The Black Immigrant Literacies framework first officially outlined in my article “Silencing Invisibility: Toward a Framework for Black Immigrant Literacies” published by Teachers College Record (Smith, 2020) and discussed in detail in my new book “Black Immigrant Literacies: Intersections of Race, Language, and Culture in the Classroom” (2023) builds on the co-authored book, “Affirming Black Students’ Lives and Literacies: Bearing Witness” (2022) and the framework of “CARE” presented by three Scholar-Mother Sisters — Drs. Arlette Willis, Gwendolyn McMillon and me.

The Black Immigrant Literacies framework allows researchers, teacher educators, practitioners, policymakers to center race by considering the following elements while instructing Black immigrant and transnational youth and the populations within which these youth are subsumed.

The framework consists of five elements:

  1. Laying claim to the struggle for justice; (Smith, 20212023)
  2. Dismantling the myth of the model minority; (Smith, 2023)
  3. Advancing the notion of “both-and” via transraciolinguistic approach based on quantum reality; (Smith, 20192022)
  4. Making visible local-global connections; (Smith, 2021Smith et al., 2022
  5. Engineering holistic literacies. (Smith et al., 2022)

Look out for my video on the framework in my Book Launch podcast with “Multicultural Classroom” (w/ Roberto Germán) coming out soon! https://www.multiculturalclassroom.com/site/meet-the-team
