From the classrooms of the Caribbean to the world’s most influential stages, Professor Patriann Smith has devoted her life’s work to transforming how we understand language, literacy, race, and human possibility.

A Saint Lucian American, Dr. Patriann Smith currently serves as Associate Dean of Faculty Success and Excellence and Professor in the College of Education at the University of South Florida. As President of a leading professional organization and a bestselling author, Dr. Smith is widely recognized as a pioneering voice in multilingual education. She has developed influential frameworks — including Transraciolinguistics, Translanguaging with Englishes, Inosans Jan Nwè, Semiolingual Innocence, Raciosemiotic Architecture, and Black Immigrant Literacies — that are reshaping how educators, researchers, and policymakers understand language and learning.

A sought-after international speaker, Dr. Smith has addressed audiences for the United Nations, UNESCO, the White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity for Black Americans, Oxford University, and institutions worldwide.
